瘦素基因缺失小鼠是研究胰島素抵抗、肥胖、II型糖尿病等疾病的重要工具。瘦素基因的突變或缺失會(huì)導(dǎo)致嚴(yán)重的肥胖、肥胖引起的性腺功能不足,并與II型糖尿病的發(fā)展密切相關(guān)。研究還發(fā)現(xiàn)瘦素與心血管功能相關(guān)。該小鼠通常也稱為ob/ob小鼠
